Where Does the Water Go?

Have you ever watched a puddle disappear after a rainstorm? The water did not really vanish. It became part of something called the water cycle. The water cycle is how water moves from the ground to the sky and back again. It never stops.

When the sun warms a puddle, lake, or ocean, some of the water turns into an invisible gas called water vapor. This is called evaporation. The water vapor floats up into the sky. As it rises higher, the air gets cooler. The cool air makes the water vapor turn back into very small water droplets. This change is called condensation. Billions of these tiny droplets group together to form clouds.

Inside a cloud, the droplets bump into each other and grow bigger. When they get too heavy to stay in the air, they fall back down to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. This is called precipitation. The water lands on the ground, in rivers, and in oceans. Then the cycle starts all over again.

The water cycle is important because every living thing needs fresh water. Plants drink water through their roots. Animals drink from lakes and streams. People use water to drink, cook, and clean. Thanks to the water cycle, Earth always has water moving and ready to use.
