Life in a Coral Reef
Hidden beneath warm, shallow ocean waters, coral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Often called the "rainforests of the sea," coral reefs cover less than one percent of the ocean floor, yet they support roughly twenty-five percent of all known marine species. This incredible biodiversity exists because every organism in the reef depends on the others to survive.
At the foundation of the reef are the corals themselves. Although they look like colorful rocks, corals are actually colonies of tiny living animals called polyps. Each polyp builds a hard limestone skeleton around itself. Over hundreds of years, these skeletons stack up to form the massive reef structures we see today. Tiny algae called zooxanthellae live inside the polyps and produce food through photosynthesis, sharing nutrients with their coral hosts in exchange for shelter.
Fish are perhaps the most visible residents of the reef. Clownfish hide among the stinging tentacles of sea anemones, protected from predators. Parrotfish use their beak-like teeth to scrape algae off the coral, keeping it clean and healthy. Cleaner wrasses set up "cleaning stations" where larger fish line up to have parasites picked from their scales.
Beyond fish, the reef teams with life at every level. Sea turtles glide through the water grazing on sea grass. Octopuses squeeze into rocky crevices to ambush crabs. Tiny shrimp and sea slugs add splashes of neon color as they crawl across the coral surface.
Every creature in the reef plays a part, from the microscopic algae that feed the coral to the sharks that keep fish populations balanced. Without any one group, the whole system would weaken. That is what makes coral reefs so remarkable — and so worth protecting.
